The Teacher

Wendy Purdon

I have been practicing yoga for 26 years, and started teaching 16 years ago. For the past 13 years I have been training under the Iyengar Yoga tradition. I am a certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher, to Junior Intermediate Level 1. I am also certified by Mindfulness Auckland (Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Program) in Mindfulness for Health Professionals. Global College of Natural Medicine, Nutritional Consultant.

My daily practice of yoga is a priority. It allows me to stand on my mat and just be present, to let go of all my hopes and fears and to clear my mind. In each asana I have the opportunity to refine the alignment of my body, to bring the weaker parts of my body to a stronger more stable place and the stiffer parts of my body to let go and relax.

My yoga practice has allowed me to enter my fifties and retain some of the qualities of my youth; my body moves freely through a full range of motion, and I believe I will be able to avoid the hunched posture that starts to solidify in many of us as we age. Yoga helps me to clear my mind of the pressures of day to day living. It gives me an emotional stability that helps me face the ups and downs of life with a little more even-mindedness so I can perform more effectively and efficiently in my daily life. Furthermore as a yoga teacher it brings me immense satisfaction to teach this practice that has transformed me, for the better of others.

"It is through the alignment of the body that I discovered the alignment of my mind, self, and intelligence."
B.K.S. Iyengar.
